Beginning Daily Life 1

「Nogikuー, you’ll be with Kiyomizu oiran today.」1
「Yes!」

It’s been a month since then.
I’ve been performing my given tasks daily.

By the way, the name『Nogiku』was given to me by Oyaji-sama who was the owner of the Amazuki Brothel. He was shocked that I couldn’t remember my own name, but “if so then…” he thought up a name for me.

When I asked ”why is it Nogiku?” he said「because I like chrysanthemums.」2
Yes, it’s very straightforward.

To inform the nii-sans that I was a girl, the day after I was picked up I observed several of the yuudan working til the end, and it also served as an introduction. 3

It would’ve been better if I were an approximately aged girl, but I was still just a small 5-year-old. They didn’t fuss over the system on this or that, I was recognized as a harmless creature, and there were no particular voices of opposition to me working at this brothel.
Everyone said『Understood』with smiles.

Like how Oyaji-sama said in the beginning, I was appointed as a kamuro as an apprentice helper to the yuudan.

For my job I would follow around a yuudan nii-san for the whole day, comb their hair and tie it up, help them wear their kimono and look after their daily necessities. While taking care of their daily necessities, it seems the purpose of being put underneath them is to learn how a yuudan is supposed to be and become a first rate oiran.

No, I don’t have any feelings to become a yuudan though.
I’ll become a male entertainer geisha. I’m a female though.

As such, today is the day I’m under Kiyomizu oiran.
Before meeting this person, I always put myself on guard.

「Good morーning, Kiyomizu-niisan.」
「Aah, you’re finally here? I got tired of waiting already. But Nogiku is very cute today too.」

Up hiーgh, so he put his arms on both my sides and true to his words lifted me up high.

This person’s name was Kiyomizu. Status is oiran. Age is 15 and he’s a first-rate oiran. Isn’t he too young!? So I thought, but it seems to be normal here, for the most part from ages 15~19 they are already bought by customers and are of age.
Hearing this, I once again was taught that the common sense from my previous world was not applicable.

Kiyomizu oiran achieved the oiran title at a young age, and was a person with very good looks. His craft is also top class.
His skin is white like snow, his long jet black hair stretches down to his back and his slit eyes hide the glimmer of a black pearl, and the bewitching sex appeal that overflows from that blackness seem to be a drug that women drown in.

Due to his personality being gentle and his demeanor soft, the ambiance that wraps around you is also popular and he is number 1 in sales.

In short, he is a super ikemen.

Let’s go back in time. To the first day I started working, the day where I made an appearance in front of all the nii-sans who would be taking care of me from now on.

『From today on, yoroshiku onegaishimasu.』

Oyaji-sama said if only then this, so I bowed the way I was taught to the kamuro like me and the oiran status men in front of me and achieved a courteous and steady bow at that time. Kiyomizu-niisama who sat in front of I who had raised my voice for the first time stood up.

『What an adorable child. It’ll be difficult for girls to do business with female partners, but we’ll firmly educate you how to be independent. Since you’re 5 you’ll be the lowest one here, so you can think of everyone as your nii-san and rely on them.』

So he said.
To I who was nervous, I still remember those understanding and gentle eyes to this day.

『Ou, do your best chibisuke.』
『I’ll be strict so prepare yourself.』
『Oyaji-sama, who will Nogiku be with today?』
『Who should it be, I wonder.』

With Kiyomizu-niisama’s words as the start the other nii-samas who raised their voices to talk to me were a little rough, but they rubbed my head and showered me in welcome.

Kiyomizu-niisama who was my heart’s savior? seemed to love small children, every time I assisted him I would receive a 『up high up high up hiーgh』attack.

Because I was mentally an adult, this attack was embarrassing so honestly I want to tell him to stop.
But inside, I did feel that this floaty feeling was somewhat fun, so here it would be better if I act like a kid and scream kya kya happily, or so I prepare myself each time and worry.
As a result,

「Un, cute cute.」
「……」

I always become silent.

Rubbing his cheeks against mine, this Nii-sama doesn’t mind me and like this always overthrows these concerns.
Without suiting his face he’s a person living life fully.

「Ahh! Kiyomizu-niisama is playing up high again with you! Nogiku, hurry up and get down!!」

In the middle of that, the loud voice that rung through nii-sama’s room belonged to the kamuro who worked with me, Shusui.
He was 3 years older than me, and started working as a yuudan apprentice kamuro here 1 year ago. In other words, he was my kamuro senpai.

He was a handsome youth with well-ordered looks, white skin, and the hair behind him and his eyes were a deep blue and wore a mysterious outfit.

Not limited to Shusui in this world there were many people with various hues of hair and eye color.
Red, yellow, purple and silver, there was also blonde hair like foreigners had. I had the feeling this world was a slightly bizarre place, so by now I wasn’t going to question『Eh, is that their real hair? Eh, is that normal? Eh, that’s weird…』
Because I am an adult. At the very least it’s because I’m an adult.
I can’t make any more declarations than this and trouble Oyaji-sama.

By the way, since Shusui has been a kamuro since he was 7, he was a golden egg raised to be a leading oiran forerunner.

But the singular digit kids similar to Shusui and the kids that entered from around age 10, no matter how blessed they were in their craft or how good their looks, they would be unable to obtain the highest status of oiran.
Those who didn’t receive specialized training when they were young could not seek to become oiran. It was a pretty severe system.

That Shusui with great promise glared at me with a ‘he へ’ shaped mouth.
Hey hey, your good looks are going to waste.

「I will also follow Kiyomizu-niisama today! Let’s hurry and change you into your unlined kimono.」
「Ahaha, Shusui sure is reliable. My bad.」

He grinned at the angry boy and lowered me down to the floor.

While Kiyomizu-niisama combed through his long and loose hair with his hands, he once again smiled and the signal to start preparation rung.

「Then I’ll be counting on you two.」
「「Yes!」」

My day had just begun.

Beginning 2

The old man who picked me up brought me to the brothel facing my back.

Surprisingly, it seems the place where I had been at was one wall right under the old man’s room. There usually wasn’t any noise, but he heard the unusual sound of a stranger stopping underneath and there I was.

Entering the brothel by the back door, I was brought to a room deep in the back while being pulled by the hand.
In the middle the old man was called out to by the pretty and stylish men of the brothel asking『a new guy?』and『ohh, another one with good features』, but the person himself ignored them outright and steadily progressed walking through the corridor.

Our destination was a cozy Japanese styled room around 10 tatami in size. However, maybe because this room was usually lived in, the low tea table in the middle of the room had half drunken tea, and smoke rose like a chimney from the tip of the Japanese smoking pipe 1 that was left behind atop the pottery.

He took out a zabuton 2 and urged me to sit.

The old man took a seat across me and took the still-smoking smoking pipe, then turned his sights towards me.

「Your age is?」

Even if he asked my age… Although I know I’m a small child I don’t know my age. Plus looking at my appearance, I only saw it for a moment when I sought to check it reflected against the river’s surface, so it was ambiguous.

「Ahh, you understand words right?」
「…Ye, s.」
「Then that’s fine.」

It seems like he imagined my life to have some sort of harsh background, while making a bitter face he ignored that I didn’t answer the questions.

「From what I can see it looks like you’re around 5 years old… and a young girl.」

My estimated age seems to be 5 years old.
I’m smaller than I expected. Or rather it’s hard to move my mouth so I can’t speak very well. Were 5-year-olds such inarticulate beings?

「Whether you comprehend or not it doesn’t matter right now. For the time being, for your first job at this Amazuki brothel, well, I’ll have you work from a kamuro position. 」
「Kamuro?」3

I tilted my head towards the unfamiliar vocabulary.

「It’s like being a little helper for the upper nii-sans 4 . It’s also referred to as a yuudan 5  apprentice. In fact, there are swarms of guys here where you can’t tell if they’re a man or a woman.」
「Haa,」
「Your looks are good too.」

Saying that he roughly tousled my head.
As opposed to his appearance, this old man is a pretty good person.

But no matter how much I knew this old man was a good person, I still wasn’t clear on exactly what kind of place this was. The root problem is a mystery.
By nii-sans, did he mean those men behind the lattices?

Although childish, I took a proper posture and inquired.

「Um」
「Hm?」
「What kind of place is dith?」

Ah, I bit my tongue.

To my question, he took a puff of his smoking pipe『aah, starting from there…』and glanced upwards.
He clanged his pipe on top of the pottery to empty the ashes and began his explanation.

「This place is… 」

The explanation I received was that this place was a pseudo-Yoshiwara-like place where men served as courtesans (yuudan). 6 That was the natural course in this world.
When I asked, “there’s no place for men to buy women?” he replied there was a place but only one, so it was nothing major.

Truly a bizarre world.

In this male brothel world, there were no women working in the first place. It wasn’t as if it were forbidden, but the system would become disordered and disturbed, so the old man explained with a serious expression.

Then why did he decide to employ me, I wonder?

Seeing my mystified face,

「Won’t it be amusing for a little girl to disguise herself as a boy?」

He laughed evilly and grinned like the smile he showed me at the back of the brothel.

「And, I won’t sell you for pleasuring so don’t worry. Even if I don’t, so that you’ll bring in a good income, I’ll raise you into splendid geisha.」7

Like this, I took a step into the world of male brothels.

  1.  Kiseru but will choose just to leave it as a Japanese smoking pipe because most people won’t know what it is. I mean, I didn’t lol
  2.  Zabuton is a floor cushion you sit on pretty much. I coulda just used floor cushion, but a lot of people know what a zabuton is already right?
  3. Kamuro are like, little assistants for the upper courtesans. From what I understand they were taken in when little and raised to be courtesans by being attached to an experienced courtesan and helping her out with getting dressed, keeping track of their customers, running errands etc. Also served as a sorta status symbol, and the highest ranking courtesans (Oirans) could have two while middle ranked had one, and lower ranked had none. The website I linked has a better explanation tho. Pic
  4. If you don’t know what nii-san means you haven’t watched enough anime.
  5. 遊男 Yuudan – written with the kanjis [遊] which means “play” and [男] “man.” So literally a playboy? Lol. This is a term coined for this world (probably) since it’s usually a “play woman” (harlot/prostitute) 遊女 yuujo.
  6. Yoshiwara was the pleasure district located in old Tokyo back when it was called Edo. Uhh… Y’know what, wiki is a better explainer than me. Wiki
  7. Geisha

Looking for a good home~ Wandering TLs, please adopt!

Some knowledge of Yoshiwara and historical Japan beforehand is a good idea though! (Which I don’t have, which is why I don’t want to take this on fully TT_TT)

Also, I’m choosing to leave more things in romaji for this series particularly mostly because idk how to translate it well.

Beginning

『If you don’t have anywhere to go, why not work at my place?』

It was a month before I was told that and picked up by Oyaji-sama. 1

For some reason when I woke up and came to while sprawled on the riverbank, I was startled to discover there were people wearing historical costume-like kimonos around me.

Eh, what, a festival?

Or so I thought, but there were some men wearing a topknot 2 hairstyle so I got the feeling it wasn’t that.

And everyone was a great deal larger than me. Or rather this uncomfortable feeling… I’m tiny!!?

When I looked at my palms, feet and stomach they were those of a child’s, and the kimono I was wearing looked worn out. I didn’t have a mirror so I peered into the water next to the riverbank and my appearance was as I thought. To think that I’d become a chibikko 3 in this situation where I couldn’t tell left from right… OTL 4

But then, I suddenly considered.

Come to think of it, who am I?

I knew about Japan, and that there were cars, and I also recalled that there were giant buildings. But, I didn’t know my identity or what type of person I was.

From the emotion of dejection I felt when I became a chibikko, I think I was a grown adult. And from referring to myself as 『watashi』, I’m sure my gender was on the female side. Well, there were men who use it occasionally too, but… 5

It was certain that this world was different from the world I was from. If not, then I’d become a resident from this world with slight amnesia, a kid with somewhat higher thinking capabilities.

With these sort of feelings and while half staggering, I must’ve walked quite a bit; before I noticed the surroundings before my eyes opened up into a new and glittering world.

It was a reversed neighborhood bizarrely packed with women, the path-like buildings had lattices installed, and when I looked inside… Hm? Men?

Exceedingly fair men were wearing beautiful kimonos and sat inside.

Huh? That’s strange, to the extent of my knowledge I had a feeling that this sort of thing was done by women.

As expected I still can’t eliminate this sense of discomfort.

Night had already completely taken over, and the lights of this neighborhood had brightened even more. Feet hurting and tired from walking, I crouched down at a girouya? jourouya? (whatever they’re called) like building to rest. 6

When I did my heart suddenly felt lonely, and I wanted to cry. Perhaps because my body was that of a child’s, before reason my instincts were drawn out and the corners of my eyes became hot.

「uh… fue」

Zaku– 7

「? You, what’re you doin in this sort of place?」8

When my sobs threatened to leak out, a voice suddenly called out to me. Startled I looked towards the direction of the voice, there was an old man in his 50’s sprouting white hair and with a stern appearance looking this way with a wrinkle between his brows.

It was a little scary.

「Lost?」

Because I was surprised, and because I was scared of the old man my voice wouldn’t come out, so I could only shake my head side to side.

「You got parents?」

To the old man who kept asking questions, I shook my head horizontally again.

「Then… a place to go home to?」

「No…ne.」

On the third question, my voice finally showed itself.

Though it was good I was able to answer, what exactly does this person want to do?

When I did, the old man began muttering to himself inaudibly like he was reciting a mantra.

『An abandoned kid? No, but parents… none… but… so』

Unable to comprehend what he was saying, I looked up at the old man in puzzlement.

After staring at me with stern eyes, he displayed a wide grin.

「Alrighty, looks are good.」

「?」

「Hey, you. If you don’t have anywhere to go, why not work at my place?」

To those invitational words, for me who had no place to go or knew zilch about this world, there was no way I’d find anything better than this option to take his outstretched hand.

  1. Oyaji: one’s father; old man; one’s boss
  2. Just think of those Japanese samurai movies or something. Those kinda hairstyles. Or you can google it.
  3. Chibikko チビッ子 = little kid. If you know what chibi means then think of that.
  4. It actually says がっくり。Gakkuri here, which means disappointment. But it felt weird to use as a standalone sentence? So I went with the next best thing I could think of “OTL” If people don’t know what OTL stands for then: google images
  5. 私 Watashi is a pronoun referring to one’s self. It’s used by women but is also used by men in a polite setting, like when they’re at work or something. There are other ways to read the kanji (like “Atashi”) but I’m just going to go with the general one. =_=
  6. 楼屋?女郎屋? Looked in dictionary but they’re both brothels? Or is there a difference? Someone informed, please clarify.
  7. ザクッ Not sure what this means either. Jumping in shock? Some sort of SFX? Or maybe it’s the sound of a door opening.
  8. Refers to her as Omae-san お前さん which is “you” pretty much
